Match Report - Winter 17/18 Week 12 - 8th February 2018
It was back to league action after a break for the cup competitions and it was business as usual in the Premier league. Frames A continue their march onto the Premier league title with a no nonsense win against Green Man A. Frames 5-1 up after the first set and eventually seeing out the match 7-3. Mark Smith the only shining light for Green Man with 2 wins, while Matty Smith and Ian Grindrod with 2 wins each for Frames.
Whitnash Tavern A keep their faint hopes of catching Frames alive with a 7-3 win at Hodcarrier. The match never in any doubt even though Mark Hepburn did secure 2 wins for Hod, Steve Mullan and Danny Buckingham with a brace each for Whitnash. Whitnash still 7 points adrift of Frames with 6 matches to play.
The Cavern Sports Bar derby went the way of the C team in a reverse of the fixture earlier in the season. Cavern A were 2 nil up But the C team came back to draw level 3-3 after the first set. Then a run of 3 frame wins saw the C team over the line, 6-4 the final score. Phil Poynter, Adan Ellis and Josh Boyce all helping themselves to braces on the night. Cavern C remain 3rd.
Fourth place Holly Bush made no mistake in their trip to Tiltyard. Tiltyard still in the match at 4-2 down after the first set, Holly didn't drop another frame and ran out 8-2 winners. Steve Brabrook, Brian Higgins, Craig Saxton and Leo Bowmaster all with 2 wins each on the night.
Green Man B picked up an important win at home against Frames C. In a tight match throughout, Green Man eventually did enough with a frame to spare, 6-4 the final score. Craig Pettipher with 2 wins for Frames while Colin Kitchen with 2 for Green Man. It couldn't be tighter at the foot of the Premier league with 4 teams tied on 10 points. Tiltyard, Frames C, Green Man B and Hodcarrier.
Division 1 saw the last unbeaten record fall as Frames B lose for the first time this season, Builders Arms A the victorious visitors. Builders made a great start winning the first 2 games, but Frames came back to draw level. Then Builders hit back with the next 3 to go 5-2 up, but Frames weren't finished there and win the next 2 to set up a tense decider. Fred Harrington the hero for Builders to complete a personal double on the night supported by teammate Nick Walker.
Whitnash Tavern B move within 2 points of the leaders in a 2 horse race for the title, but they again left it late with a close 6-4 win over struggling Hope Tavern. After the early exchanges were shared, Tavern needed the last 2 frames for the win. Corey Berry with 2 wins for Tavern while Garry Wright with 2 in vain for Hope.
Woodloes Tavern's faint hope of a top 2 finish effectively disappeared as they fell to a surprise defeat at the hands of Joiners Arms B. After a close game throughout, it was Joiners who snatched the deciding frame in a 6-4 win thanks to Mauro Plama's brace. Tony Poynter with 2 wins for Woodloes.
After Green Man C's impressive win in the cup last week, they came back down to earth with a bump in a surprise draw at bottom of the table Greyhound. It could have been worse for Green Man as they needed a last gasp winner to salvage a point. Paul Crossley with 2 wins for Green Man while Martin Riley with 2 for Greyhound.
Wheatsheaf Inn A join Woodloes, Green Man and Builders on 17 points after they came out on top in the Old Town derby with Jet A. After trailing 2-1, they won 6 out of the next 7 frames to run out 7-3 winners. Sean Butler and Daz Hynes both helping themselves to doubles on the night while Oliver O'Reilly with a brace for Jet.
Division 2 has taken on a whole new complexion since runaway leaders Clarendon have now lost 3 on the bounce. Their slump in form continued this week with a 9-1 thrashing at Joiners Arms A. The match never in any doubt as Damien Timms, John Stemp and Keith Todd all help themselves to double on the night. Joiners now just 5 points behind Clarendon.
Joiners look the most likely side to catch Clarendon as Foresters drop points for the second week running in a 5-5 draw at Builders Arms B. Builders will be kicking themselves they didn't take all 3 points however after finding themselves 5-1 up. Foresters won the last 4 frames to snatch an unlikely point. Foresters' Sam Whetstone with the only brace on the night.
Radford Semele Club consolidate 4th position with a 6-4 win against relegation threatened Windmill B. The match over at 6-2, Windmill did take the last 2 frames to make the final score a more respectable 6-4. Windmill's Richard Smith with 2 wins.
Fusilier finally get their first win of the season at the 12th attempt, St Patrick's Club the victims. It could have gone either way at 4-4 but Fusilier held their nerve for a change to close out the final 2 frames. Dave Rayner with the all important 2 wins for Fuse. Fusilier still 9 points from safety while St Pat's are being drawn into a relegation battle.
Elephant & Castle's season continues to improve with another good win at home against 5 player Grist Mill to move out of the relegation zone. The missing player proving costly for Grist Mill as Castle cross the winning line with a frame to spare, 6-4 the final score. Rick Waterhouse and Stuart Clarke with a brace each for Castle while averages leader Russell Collins on song again for Grist Mill.
In division 3 it was a chance for the chasing pack to close the gap on leaders Bowling Green as they had a bye this week. Green Man D failed to take advantage as an improving Wild Boar upset the title hopefuls. The Warwick side going 6-2 up before Green Man took the last 2 consolation frames. Ricky Howells and Tarzan Baghria with doubles for Wild Boar.
Wheatsheaf Inn B made very hard work of their win against Jet B who could only field 4 players, Sheaf having to rely on a last gasp frame win for 6-4. Lee Amos with 2 wins for Sheaf while Brian Tallis replied with 2 for Jet.
Cavern Sports Bar B complete a double over New Inn but remain bottom of division 3. Cavern racing into a 4-0 lead before seeing out the game, 7-3 the final score. Kevin Mackie, Ryan Robinson-Twigger and Josh Hillier helping themselves to a brace each for Cavern, while John McDaid, unbeaten for the season, replied with 2 for New Inn.
Cavern are now just a point behind Windmill A as they lose at home against Murphy's Bar. Windmill were 2 nil to the good before Murphy's hit back to go 4-2 up, eventually crossing the winning line with a frame to spare, 6-4 the final score. Harry Billington with 2 wins for Murphy's while Joe Fortunato replied with 2 for Windmill.
